Engine Failure Investigation

These pictures show piston rings with excessive wear and illustrate the thoroughness required for an engine failure investigation. Engine failure investigation is a complex job and there are few companies with the requisite expertise to undertake this kind of assignment.

The supplied piston ring with the deliberately broken segments arranged correctly.

Top surface of ring (typical). No unusual distress is present. The arrows indicate the feathered edge of the ring face.

Vent groove on least worn side of ring.

Vent groove on most worn side of ring, almost obliterated.

Ring face wear bands (a) flat, light wear; (b) slightly bevelled, harsher wear; (c) narrow edge bevel associated with feathered edge.

Nigal etch x 100
General microstructure. Vermicular ("compact") graphite in a matrix of pearlite with traces of ferrite (white).

Nigal etch x 200
Microstructure along edge of ring wear face (arrows). No trace of frictional heat alterations is evident.
