Environmental Engine Retrofit Projects

While the effectiveness of any new emission mitigation technology is crucial, even more critical is the specialized expertise required to enable the technology by effectively retrofitting it to an existing engine on a vessel. Danica enables environmental engine enhancements by providing the requisite marine diesel engine expertise in the form of consulting, design and development, modification and installation for these new systems.

Danica Diesel has been intimately involved in two high-profile government-funded research projects in the Port of Los Angeles led by Sea to Sky Pollution Solutions to demonstrate the viability of water in fuel emulsion as a means of reducing emissions on large ocean going vessels. Danica was chosen by Sea to Sky Pollution Solutions to participate in its projects to provide the consulting and specialized expertise required to retrofit the diesel engines with new pollution abatement technology called WiFE on Demand. Danica continues to act in an advisory and consulting capacity for engine-related aspects of the system.

Both projects involve high-level players including the Environmental Protection Agency of United States, the California Air Resources Board, the Ports of both Los Angeles and Long Beach, the University of California Riverside and world-leading shipping companies APL Maritime and Seaspan Ship Management.
